Your Eyes are more than Just a Number
Routine eye exams are not just about testing your visual acuity. An annual comprehensive eye exam is also an important preventative step against ocular diseases that can threaten your vision. At Eyes of Chicago, we offer thorough eye examinations for patients of all ages. Our optometrists go above and beyond a simple refraction. They will take time to assess your complete ocular health and answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your vision.
TONOMETRY TESTINGTonometry is the procedure our doctors use to measure the fluid pressure in your eyes. At our office, our doctors use a fluorescent dye instead of an air puff to obtain a more accurate reading. This test is important in determining your risk of glaucoma and also assists in determining the severity of eye dryness. While the dye does not impair your vision, a numbing sensation is common and will wear off fairly quickly.

PUPIL DILATIONDid you know that the eye is the only location in the body where the central nervous system is visible from the outside? A dilated eye exam is important because it allows your doctor to view the entire posterior surface of the eye to check for any abnormalities in your tissues or optic nerve. We recommend pupil dilation to every patient but it is especially important in those with a history of diabetes or glaucoma. Common side effects include impaired near vision and increased light sensitivity for 4-6 hours.

DIGITAL RETINAL IMAGINGTake your eye exam one step further by obtaining a real-time image of your retina, the nerve layer located behind the eye. No additional eye drops are necessary and your doctor can discuss your results instantly. This image assists in early detection of many diseases and documents the health of your eye, particularly the optic nerve and macula. Yearly photos can also be used to monitor any future changes in your ocular health.
